Freaky Fast, Freaky Drone: Drones Upcoming Role in IT and Logistics

While drones have had their place in movies and the military for years, their newest frontier just may be your front door. Logistics is an ever-evolving industry, and it has to be; people continue to expect their products at a faster and faster rate. Companies have to have effective and efficient logistics systems to meet customers needs at the ever-increasing rate. Drones seem to be one of the next key elements to solving this problem. With all of the information capable of being used and stored in them, drones are becoming a key player in information technology and its role in logistics.
Amazon has recently been dabbling with the idea and bringing it to fruition; some Amazon Prime members have had their orders delivered in 30 minutes or less. And honestly, a shipping option like this makes sense, especially for urban areas with high traffic. However, it may make even more sense to utilize this for low populated areas, or places that are hard to reach by other means of transportation.
With information technology constantly changing with every new software and hardware update, it really should come as no surprise that drones are going to evolve quickly and drastically. And with the need for new and effective logistics and transportation methods, drones seem to fit the bill quite nicely. It’s safe to say that they will be an important, if not necessary, part of our logistical future.

Our Thoughts on IT Concerning Logistics

We are hoping to discover the various ways in which information technology has affected the Logistics world.
Currently, IT has a profound presence in the overall Logistics process. There are many data systems used to coordinate schedules, record inventory levels, and also create the most cost effective, efficient transportation routes. Although many current systems work fluently, there are still many upcoming IT adoptions in the current Logistics industry.
According to the article "Impact of information technology on the performance of logistics industry" by King Lung Choy, the current use of IT technology is able to support instant feedback regarding communication and the integration of the supply chain as a whole. Furthermore, it provides the ability to decipher various amounts of information to further support and enhance management decisions.
Based on the recent use of drones by booming companies, such as Amazon, it can be seen that endless amounts of opportunities in information technology are becoming readily available. We are further interested in other forms of future innovation within the IT field and how it affects Logistics today.
